Design challenge finalists offer budget-friendly inspiration at Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show
Many entered, four were chosen and only one will be the winner of the Dreaming of Design Challenge at Tidewater Builders Association’s Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show presented by Belgard Hardscapes, March 9-11, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
A panel of professional designers chose four finalists after the field was narrowed to 10 by online voting. The finalists are Marlies Hughes, Virginia Beach, for her “Daily Retreat” living room; Chikako Loree, Virginia Beach, for her “Stylish Craft Room;” Barb Owens, Virginia Beach, for her “Sweet Teen Dreams” bedroom; and Amy Warren, Chesapeake, for her “Mom Cave” den.
Their challenge was to go online and submit the design of any room in the house using no more than $2,500 worth of Value City Furniture and $100 worth of Benjamin Moore paint. The prize is a $2,500 shopping spree to Value City Furniture. Thirty-one contestants took the challenge, garnering a total of more than 2,300 online votes before the contest ended at midnight on Feb. 19.
Before Hampton Roads’ next design diva is crowned and given her shopping spree at Value City, she will first bring her creations to life at the home show. The four finalists will have 24 hours to create their rooms beginning at
10 a.m. on Friday, March 9, using the furniture and paint from their submitted designs in a 10’ by 14’ showroom.
“Everybody thinks they have a little bit of designer in them, and this is a chance for everyday people to explore their hidden talents,” said Mike Dalton, general manager of Value City’s Virginia Beach store, which is sponsoring the contest along with Benjamin Moore.
Show visitors will see the online rooms come to life, while also offering some budget-friendly inspirations. A panel of professional judges will pick a winner on Saturday, March 10, and she will be announced at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the show. Following the announcement, HGTV’s Sabrina Soto will present her design tips and tricks to show visitors.
